Bridge Expected to Open for Start of School Work continues to replace the pedestrian bridge that spans Wootton Parkway near Lakewood Elementary School. A new bridge has been fabricated and is expected to be completed and installed by Aug. 30.
Plans for an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant path connection from Glenmore Terrace to the bridge are currently in design. Construction will begin after the bridge is installed. The 37-year-old bridge was removed on July 15.
Rockville is working to ensure that bicyclists are able to have their needs met by using the City's infrastructure. It's also working to make sure that information is easily available to cyclists.
The City's Traffic and Transportation Division is responsible for improving safety, lighting, traffic controls and bicycle connections between neighborhood and street networks.
One of the ways Rockville is committed to creating safe bicycling opportunities is by providing an up-to-date bicycle map of various routes throughout the city. The City now offers a zoom feature for its bike map that helps cyclists better navigate their route and more easily identify roads.
The map highlights roads with bike lanes, shared-use roads with signs, shared-use paths, the millennium trail and two through-city routes. It also highlights the locations of tire air sources, bike shops, convenience stores, community centers, libraries, drinking fountains and public restrooms.
Check out this new feature on the City website at www.rockvillemd.gov/transportation/bike_map.
Nearly every page of the Rockville website, www.rockvillemd.gov, is now available in 10 languages through Google Translate.
"We think this is an important and valuable service to provide to our diverse community," said Marylou Berg, communication manager.
To use the service, website visitors simply go to the specific web page they are looking for and use a pull down menu to select the language in which they would like to read the page.
The languages available are Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese.
The service relies on computerized translation and may translate some words out of context or inaccurately.
The City's new Connections web page, www.rockvillemd.gov/connections, makes it easier than ever to stay informed about Rockville's news, programs and events.
The page is a one-stop shop with links to all of the City's Facebook pages, Twitter feeds, e-mail listservs, RSS feeds, online video, YouTube channel and text message alerts.
The variety of links allows residents to receive news and updates in the way that is easiest for them and select what type of information they want from the City and when and how often they want to receive that information.
Seniors in Rockville can receive the latest community news delivered straight to their e-mail each month with the new "Out and About: Add Life to Your Years" electronic newsletter.
The newsletter features events and programs specifically for seniors as well as links to the City's Senior Center website, upcoming performances at the F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and other Rockville news.
To sign up for the monthly newsletter, send an e-mail to pio@rockvillemd.gov with your first and last name and e-mail address.
