1988 (Potomac Bluestone)
Silver Spring, Maryland

Artist’s Statement:

The City of Rockville is named after the bedrock of the area, a Piedmont schist commonly known as Potomac bluestone. This information coupled with the intrinsic qualities of the material influenced my choice of locally quarried bluestone for the sculpture environment at Monument Park.

The stone environment crowns the gentle and clean contours of the hill in the park with a ring of large letters that appropriately spell Rockville. Entering the city from Maryland Avenue, the massive upright stones forming the “I" and the "L" can be seen.

The adventurous and the curious who climb the hill will encounter natural stones that seem to have grown at the site. The letters facing the baseball diamond have been stepped into the slope to create opportunities for seating and for viewing the games. The sculpture Rockville©, through a primitive and direct handling of stone, is intended to visually complement and emphasize the beauty of the open and untouched space and of the inherent continuity at Monument Park.

Budget: $25,000
