Artist’s Statement:
I designed the fountain for Rockville’s Courthouse Square Park
with an appreciation for the architectural and artistic influences
already present. The figure is done in a neoclassical style to blend
in with the historical nature of the area. The base and stem of the
fountain contain some of the design elements of the courthouse and
the stonework around the fountain. The patina or the color of the
bronze as well as the textures used in the work reflect elements of
the site and blend in with the “feel” of the area. All
of these elements create a feeling of warmth, familiarity and an old
town atmosphere.

The
base of the fountain subtly reflects the agricultural and transportation
crossroads that identified early Rockville life. The split in the
stem of the fountain, represents the division of the community during
the civil war. The female figure represents Rockville’s future.
She holds the guiding light of wisdom leading the way to the future.
By the use of these elements a sense of place, identity and civic
pride are created. The figure e at the top of the fountain illuminates
the future and conveys strength, force and direction. This makes the
fountain a work of art that all people can relate to and grow old
with.
