Rockville’s
Art in Public Places program was established in 1978. As of 2004,
a collection of 36 works has been permanently installed throughout
the City of Rockville.
The City of Rockville values the arts as an integral element of
our community and understands that the arts help to generate an
identity that continues to make Rockville a destination. It is the
goal of the Art in Public Places program to have publicly accessible
arts of the highest quality throughout the City of Rockville that
reflect the vitality and diversity of the people and business within
the area. The arts help to preserve and enrich the character of
the community, improve the quality of life within the City, ameliorate
the harshness of increased urbanization, and foster economic vitality
of the community.
Rockville’s Art in Public Places program
is funded through two City sources and welcomes working with private
partnerships:
|
- The “Works of Art in Public Places”
project requires the setting aside of $1 per capita in the City’s
Capital Improvements Program for the commission or acquisition
of art to be owned and maintained by the City that is installed
in publicly accessible locations.
- The “Incorporation of Works of Art
in Public Architecture” ordinance requires that one percent
of the construction cost of City of Rockville construction projects
be set aside for works of art.
In addition to being committed to an ongoing program for new permanent
works of art, the Art in Public Places program annually supports
temporary art projects.
The Art in Public Places program is administered
by the Department of Recreation and Parks Arts Division staff working
in conjunction with the City’s Cultural Arts Commission. This
public art program is guided through policies established in the
Master Plan for the Art in Public Places Program, which is revised
every six years.
