1999 (Ceramic Tile)
Amherst, Massachusetts
Artist’s Statement:
The imagery is taken from a variety of design elements from different
cultures: i.e., Chinese, Japanese, Celtic, African, Spanish, Native
American, and Arab. The patterns are woven together to form an arch.
The arch is a symbolic doorway, a doorway to learning. In many ways,
the Senior Center is a place for instruction, enjoyment, and exchange.
Senior citizens have valuable knowledge and experiences to share with
each other and younger generations. The tiled wall is a modest monument
to honor the diverse heritages and the individual stories of each
member of the Senior Center and their sense of community.
Budget: $15,000
