1981 (Cast Paper Relief)
Leesburg, Virginia
Artist’s Statement:
“My cast paper works, now on-going for nearly ten years, have
for the most part been concerned with the contemporary adaptation
of an ancient art form: The Stele. The Stele was used by past civilizations
to record in writing or other symbols the histories of rulers, great
events, or beliefs. I have used the Stele to record the history of
my fantasy experience and possibly, I suspect, even that imprinted
by the collective memory of my ancestors. I have recorded this history
in a language of forms, the meaning of which is to be sensed, rather
than understood intellectually.

Each
piece begins as a drawing done spontaneously, the emergence of each
shape suggesting and influencing the next, and the next. The drawing
is then translated into a positive relief model, from which is made
a negative mold. Into this mold is pressed by hand, i.e. cast, macerated
cotton, bonding agent, and water. After drying the piece is sealed
and framed.”
