Artist's Statement:

"On Site" is a five-piece sculpture that creates a space into which the spectator can walk. This architectonic-sculptural work consists of five concrete pillars (approximately 15 feet high), which are arranged in a circle having the same distance to each other. The diameter of the inner circle is seven meters (seven is a holy number). The circle is an absolute geometrical measure representing endlessness and eternity. As it is an empty place the spectator is concentrated on herself/himself (self-perception of the individual relating to the sculptural forms and the surrounding). The five pillars, which have a red-brown color, the color of earth, are composed of the combination 4 + 1. Four is the number of creation (i.e., the four seasons). One pillar stands out against the other four because of its color. The surface of the aluminum plates, which are attached to the inside of the pillars, is divided into bisections by small metal cross bars.

Continuing these bisections mentally you end up in microcosmic dimensions. Due to this fact in the top of the four of the five plates there are blue painted panels. Blue is the color of spirituality. In the top of the fifth plate the panel is painted black which stands for transitoriness and death. In addition, the work has to be set up in a way that the pillar with the black panel orients to the north what also could be regarded as a reference to death. My aim was to create a place of event. "On Site" also reveals its function by evolving a communicative acting like gathering, talking, walking, and sitting. The meaning of this place is created as a mental process by each single participant.

Budget: $30,000
