Federal and State Grants

The Traffic and Transportation Division actively submits applications for grant funding to state and federal agencies. These funds are programmed into projects that directly benefit residents.

Recently, the City has been awarded the following federal and state grants:

Safe Routes to School

The Traffic and Transportation Division, along with the Rockville City Police Department and the Department of Recreation and Parks, coordinates Safe Routes to School programs in Rockville schools.

The emphasis of the program is education, enforcement and transportation improvements. The goal of the programs is to improve the safety of children walking and bicycling to school.

The Traffic and Transportation Division has applied for and received more than $500,000 in grant funds. Projects funded through the grant include sidewalk installation, speed reduction devices and education and encouragement programs.

Pedestrian Access Earmarked Funds

Crosswalk Countdown SignalTo improve pedestrian safety, the city has earmarked funds from the Maryland State Highway Administration for the installation of pedestrian countdown signals at all City-owned signalized intersections.

The money received, which is nearly $150,000, will reimburse the City for money spent on the countdown signals.
