Traffic Management

Stonestreet     Pard Road

City staff addresses resident concerns about excessive speeding and high volumes of traffic through standards set forth in the Guidelines for Neighborhood Traffic Management. This document contains strategies available to divert or otherwise alter traffic flow through neighborhoods, as well as strategies to calm traffic and reduce speeds.

Residents must submit either a Speed Control or Traffic Diversion petition to be considered for traffic calming. Upon receipt of such a petition, staff will contact the petitioner to discuss the issue and explain what steps staff will take to evaluate the neighborhood’s concern.

Neighborhood Traffic Control

Traffic Signals
The City owns and operates traffic signals throughout Rockville on a variety of city, county and state roads. For a complete overview of traffic signal ownership and operation, or to report a problem with a traffic signal, please see:

Street Classification List
Across the City, roads serve a variety of different traffic patterns and drivers. In order to maintain a safe and efficient transportation system, the City classifies each street based on its role in the greater transportation system and surrounding land uses. These classifications determine which traffic mitigation options are available for a given roadway.
