Learn to Swim

Volunteers have an opportunity to work alongside instructors to help children learn to swim. Volunteers sometimes go on to apply for a position as a swim instructor and gain useful experience while also earning SSL hours. Some volunteers have an opportunity to work one-on-one with students who need extra attention.

Duties to be Expected

  • Volunteers work as an instructor's aid and are paired up in the pool with paid instructors.
  • They also set out the kick boards, diving rings, and life jackets and help put away the swim equipment after lessons.
  • Take attendance and help complete report cards.
  • Demonstrate swimming skills for the class.


Volunteers must be able to demonstrate the swimming skills for the level they are working with. Previous experience working with children preferred but not required. Volunteers with experience working with special needs population preferred but not required. Successful competition of a background check required for all volunteers over the age of 14.

Application Process

You can apply to become a volunteer of the Learn to Swim program by completing the online application. 

A time commitment of 7-8 weeks is required. Volunteers are needed primarily on the weekends, Saturdays from 8:45 a.m.-noon and Sundays from 8:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Weekday hours are available, but are in less demand. Available weekdays include Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 3:35-5:15 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursdays from 4:35-6:15 p.m.
