Marylanders of Note: H.L. Mencken
Monday, September 19, 2022
There are many famous and not so famous (but important) Marylanders. Maryland is famous for many things: blue carbs, the Ravens, and Spiro Agnew. We are also home to the first railroad, first dental school, and the first umbrella factory. This course will focus on historic figures, politicians, scientists, authors, artists and more. Instructor: Joan Adams.
H.L. Mencken: Born in Baltimore in 1880, he became one of America's best-known journalists and a pungent critic of American life. His caustic view of life made a considerable contribution to American culture. Organized religion, business, and the middle class were targets of his acerbic view of the world around him. When he died in 1956, he was probably the leading authority on the language of this country. How did Mencken accomplish this? What r ole did he play as a member of the Baltimore Sun staff?
