Rockville Recognizes Black History Month with Proclamation, Presentations

Glenview-Peerless Speaker Series and Rockville 11 Offer Opportunities to Reflect
Rockville, Maryland, Feb. 7 – The Mayor and Council marked Black History Month with a proclamation at their Monday, Feb. 5 meeting that called on “the Rockville community to learn about, share stories, recognize, and appreciate the many contributions made by African-Americans throughout the region and to participate in the many educational events honoring the contributions of African-Americans.”

The City of Rockville offers two such educational opportunities this week, including a free screening of “Community Cornerstones: African American Communities in Montgomery County, Maryland” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8, at Glenview Mansion, 603 Edmonston Drive.

Produced by Heritage Montgomery, the 60-minute documentary features five historic church communities, from among the 40 African-American churches built in Montgomery County between the Civil War and the civil rights movement. The film shows how, in these cornerstones of their communities, generations of black families created their own spiritual, social and educational opportunities.

The screening is part of the Glenview Mansion and Peerless Rockville Speaker Series. Learn more about the screening at or For more on Heritage Montgomery, visit

A video short, produced by the city’s Rockville 11, shows how the Rockville community recently came together to preserve part of the city’s African-American history. It began with a day of service by over 70 volunteers, including people with Peerless Rockville and an Eagle Scout candidate, who restored the historic Haiti Cemetery, a final resting place for freed slaves.
