Rockville’s Mayor Newton Becomes Maryland Municipal League President

Will Serve from 2018-2019 Under Theme of ‘Together, We Can’

Rockville, Maryland, June 14 — City of Rockville Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton has become president of the Maryland Municipal League, a statewide organization that represents and advocates on behalf of Maryland’s 157 towns and cities. Newton has served as the organization’s president-elect since MML’s 2017 summer conference.

Each year, incoming MML presidents choose a theme for their term. Newton’s 2018-2019 theme is “Together, We Can.”

“These are uncertain times in government,” Newton said. “Municipal government is the closest to the people. We know firsthand that you lead best and accomplish more by working together. I look forward to this year as Maryland's cities and towns lead the way to a better Maryland for all.”

Newton, who will serve 2018-2019, will be the sixth president from Rockville to head the organization since its founding in 1936. The last MML president from Rockville, Councilmember John Tyner II, currently a member of the Rockville Planning Commission, served from 1983-84.

MML is governed by a 31-member board of directors comprised of elected and appointed officials from throughout the state. Newton was elected to the MML Board of Directors in 2012 and named chair of the organization’s legislative committee after a year as vice chair. Newton served as president of the Montgomery Chapter of MML from November 2012 through June 2015. As president-elect, Newton sat on the league’s five-member executive committee.

Newton was elected as a Rockville councilmember in 2009 and as mayor in 2013. As mayor, Newton serves as the council liaison to the Recreation and Park Advisory Board, Rockville Economic Development, Inc. and Rockville Seniors, Inc. She is a member of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments’ Board of Directors. In December 2016, she was unanimously elected chair of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board.
