Ritchie Park Fourth-Grader to Be Rockville’s ‘Mayor for a Day’

Rockville, Maryland, May 20 – If he were mayor, Jaden Walcoff would find a way for food trucks and restaurants to coexist.

Walcoff, a fourth-grader in Jennifer McInroy’s class at Ritchie Park Elementary School in Rockville, will get to see what it’s like to be mayor when he serves as the city’s honorary “Mayor for a Day” on Thursday, May 23. He earned the honor after his essay was selected as a district winner of the “If I Were Mayor, I Would …” statewide essay contest sponsored by the Maryland Municipal League (MML) and the Maryland Mayors’ Association (MMA).

On his day as mayor, Jaden will tour the Rockville City Police Department and Croydon Creek Nature Center, attend the city’s Department of Public Works Equipment Show and have lunch with Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton. Members of the media are invited to interview and photograph the “mini-mayor” at work on May 23. To arrange to do so, call Director of Communication Marylou Berg at 240-314-8105.

The essay contest asked students to describe how, if they were mayor, they would get the community and fellow officials to work better together. Jaden suggested making a rule preventing food trucks from parking and selling food in front of restaurants.

“I would need to convince my fellow officials that my proposal is a good way to solve this problem so food trucks and restaurants can stay in business,” he wrote. “Also, so the city would not lose tax money to pay for services. Finally, I would help the stakeholders communicate and collaborate with each other by taking turns to explain what they think about my proposal and making suggestions about how big the distance should be between food trucks and restaurants and how big the area should be where food trucks can serve food.”

In addition to his day as mayor, Jaden and three contest semifinalists will be recognized at the Mayor and Council meeting that begins at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, May 20. He also will participate in Rockville’s 75th Annual Memorial Day Parade at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 27.
