Peerless Presents a Pioneer in Psychiatry
March 1, 2021
Join Peerless Rockville and professor Gail Hornstein, author of “To Redeem One Person Is to Redeem the World: The Life of Frieda Fromm-Reichmann,” online for a free presentation at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25.
Hornstein will tell the inspiring story of Fromm-Reichmann, the German-Jewish refugee analyst who was able to do what Freud and almost everyone else thought impossible – successfully treat people diagnosed with schizophrenia and other severe forms of emotional distress using intensive psychotherapy, rather than medication, lobotomy or shock treatment.
A pioneer in her field, Fromm-Reichmann was the pivotal figure of Rockville’s unique and legendary mental hospital, Chestnut Lodge. In honor of her extraordinary achievements, Frieda’s Cottage – her home and office at Chestnut Lodge for more than 20 years, and an iconic place in the history of psychiatry – was recently declared a National Historic Landmark.
Participants will receive a link to the Zoom meeting upon registration at peerlessrockville.org.
