A Brighter, Greener Rockville

Croydon Creek Nature Center is shining a little brighter these days. In November, the city upgraded the building with new LED lighting, bringing crisp, energy-efficient illumination to the space.
The project replaced 130 lights at the center with energy-efficient LEDs. These new lights not only enhance visibility and safety but also save energy, reduce maintenance costs and cut greenhouse gas emissions. Many of the new lights feature occupancy sensors with automated dimming, saving energy when spaces are unoccupied.
The improved lighting efficiency is projected to save the city $2,273 in annual electricity costs while also noticeably brightening the space for staff and the public. The project was largely funded by a Pepco rebate and a Maryland Smart Energy Communities grant from the Maryland Energy Administration.
“It was an honor supporting this ‘en-light-ening’ investment,” said Denzel John, Rockville’s sustainability program manager.
LED lighting upgrades were completed earlier this year at F. Scott Fitzgerald Theatre and Rockville Civic Center Park. More updates are underway at Thomas Farm Community Center and the city’s maintenance facility. These upgrades are a shining example of how small changes can make a big impact on the environment and the Rockville community.
