Holiday Season Safety Tips

The holiday season can be a time for festive gatherings, but also carries potential safety considerations. From children’s toys and decorations to winter weather and dangerous road conditions, planning and preparation can minimize injury risks and potential hazards.

Keep these tips in mind to have a Happy and Safe Holiday Season:

  • Keep sidewalks and driveways safe by salting ahead of snow and rain that freeze into ice when temperatures fall
  • Make sure your vehicle is road-trip ready and pack emergency and first aid kits
  • Check the weather forecast, plan your trip, keep the gas tank full, and don’t drive while impaired by fatigue, alcohol, or medications that can affect the central nervous system
  • Discard Christmas lights with worn or broken parts, read the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, and turn the lights off before going to sleep or leaving the house
  • Water live Christmas trees regularly, select artificial trees that are labeled “fire resistant”, and place trees at least three feet away from heat sources
  • Use indoor lights for indoor use and outdoor lights outdoors, be mindful of tripping hazards from loose electric cords and instability risks when using a ladder
  • Choose toys and gifts that are age appropriate being careful to keep toys with small parts out-of-reach from children under age three because of choking hazards
  • Make sure your home is a safe environment if babies or toddlers will be visiting and remove falling and choking dangers ahead of time
  • Anticipate safety concerns when traveling with young children and discuss them with your host ahead of time
  • Review the available hotel accommodations so you know what to bring, and “baby-proof” the room at check-in – especially if the baby is crawling
  • Have a plan for where babies and toddlers will sleep, how they can safely play and be entertained, and bring a few favorite travel toys, if possible
  • Remember Safe Food Handling and Preparation and wash your hands frequently
  • Candles should never be left unattended, and both candles and fireplaces should be at least three feet away from flammable items
  • Fireplaces should be inspected annually, properly maintained, and used with the flue open and a fireplace screen or glass doors
