Rockville City Police Department Provides Update on Wootton High School Shooting

The suspect in Monday’s shooting at Thomas S. Wootton High School pointed a gun at a 15-year-old female student before shooting another student at the school, Rockville City Police Chief Jason L. West said at a news conference Tuesday.

The female victim who the gun was pointed at was not injured.

West was joined at the news conference at Rockville City Hall by Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy, Montgomery County Sheriff Maxwell C. Uy and Montgomery County Police 1st District Commander Capt. Jordan Satinsky.

A 16-year-old male victim who was shot remains in stable condition at a local hospital. Police are still investigating the motive, including any relationship between the victims and the defendant, and how the defendant acquired the firearm.

The 16-year-old defendant is charged with attempted second-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, two counts of second-degree assault, and various firearms-related charges, including possession of a dangerous weapon on school property.

A bond hearing for the defendant is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Montgomery County District Court. He is being held without bond. A preliminary hearing for the defendant is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 20 in Montgomery County District Court.
