The third week in September is Child Passenger Safety Week. This national campaign urges parents and caregivers to protect their children making sure they secure them in the correct car seat for their age, height, and weight. When used correctly, car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers.
Know the Stages
From birth to about age 3, use a rear-facing car seat until your child reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by the car seat’s manufacturer. Keep your child rear-facing for as long as possible.
After outgrowing the rear-facing car seat, use a forward-facing car seat with a harness and tether until about age 5, or when your child reaches the top height or weight limit allowed by the manufacturer.
Once your child outgrows a forward-facing seat at approx. ages 4 to 7 years, your child can travel in a booster seat, but still should only travel in the back seat of the vehicle. Your child should be buckled in a belt-positioning booster seat with a seat belt that fits properly.
At approx. ages 8 to 12 years, use the 5-Step Seat Belt Fit Test to determine if your child is ready to use the seat belt alone. Remember, it is still safer for children at this stage to continue to ride in the back seat. The 5 points of seatbelt readiness include:
The child can sit up straight while its back is fully against the vehicle seat.
The child’s knees can bend over the edge of the vehicle seat at a 90-degree angle.
The lap bet fits snugly on the child’s hips, not stomach.
The shoulder belt fits across the chest, not the neck, arm, nor face.
The child can stay in the position for the duration of the trip.
