Martin Luther King Jr. Day to Bring Closures, Celebration to Rockville

City’s Virtual Ceremony to Celebrate ‘MLK50: Past, Present and Future’

Rockville, Maryland, Jan. 11 – City government and most city facilities will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, Jan. 17.

City Hall’s reopening to the public has been delayed following a surge in COVID-19 cases driven by the new, more infectious omicron variant.

The Rockville Swim and Fitness Center will be open for regular hours. All other city facilities will be closed.

Recycling and trash collections will occur one day later than usual throughout the week. For more information on recycling and trash collection, visit www.rockvillemd.gov/recycling-trash or call 240-314-8568.

Parking will be free at city-owned meters on Jan. 17.

Rockville’s 50th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration, “MLK50: Past, Present and Future,” will include a video presentation at 10 a.m. Jan. 17 on Rockville 11, channel 11 on county cable, and the city’s YouTube channel, highlighting past Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebrations and Mayor and Council initiatives to promote equity and inclusion in Rockville.

Harmony’s African-American Legacy Organization will host an interactive virtual event from noon-1:45 p.m. online via Webex. HALO will perform barbershop songs, engage in racial equity discussions and lead group discussions guided by prompts from King’s book “Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community?”

The virtual event will include the presentation of the Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Award to a student at a Rockville high school who has worked to fulfill King’s dream, and the F. Michael Taff Award to an individual, organization or business that has helped to improve the lives of people with disabilities.
