Mark Black History Month with the powerful story of the Rockville Weems family’s brave quest for freedom for all of their children.
Please join Peerless Rockville in welcoming Canadian historians Bryan and Shannon Prince as they share the heart-wrenching—and at times heartwarming—story of John and Arabella Weems and their family, who were enslaved, sold, separated, and scattered throughout the South. Their epic journey weaves through networks of slave traders, Underground Railroad operatives, and abolitionists across Canada, Great Britain, Jamaica, and the United States. Inspired by the impact of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, supporters rallied their resources to help rescue and reunite the family. Their daughter, Ann Maria Weems, is celebrated as one of the most well-known freedom seekers connected to Rockville’s Underground Railroad.
This session is virtual, and a link will be sent to all registrants before the event.
