Human Rights Commission

Established by Section 11-36 of the Rockville City Code, the Human Rights Commission works to minimize conflict and promote diversity within the city. To meet these goals, the commission offers services and educational and cultural programs that encourage civic awareness, foster global thinking, and reflect the city’s diversity.

These programs and services include voter registration and education, community outreach, the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative, the Student Ambassador Program, the Multimedia Scholarship Competition, and community celebrations such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Rockville Pride. The commission also advises the Mayor and Council on human rights issues affecting residents.

To promote diversity and improve human relations, the commission seeks to understand the issues facing the city’s communities. To that end, it engages in outreach activities and encourages community members to attend monthly meetings, participate in programs, and apply for commission vacancies.
