Act Now: Clean Energy Tax Credits End Soon

July 28, 2025

Federal tax credits on electric vehicles and appliances, solar panels and more are expiring in the coming months, so the time is now to apply to take advantage of them while you still can.

Here’s what you need to know to save money with these clean energy tax credits:

Electric vehicles: The federal tax credits of $7,500 per new electric vehicle and $4,000 per pre-owned vehicle expire Tuesday, Sept. 30. If you’ve been considering purchasing or leasing an electric vehicle now is the time. Many models are available within the price range of a conventional vehicle. And EVs have lower operating costs and are easier to maintain (no oil changes!).

Questions? Check out Ask an EV Owner online Q&A sessions from  7:30-8:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of the month, including Aug. 6.

Solar: The 30% federal tax credit for solar panels will expire Wednesday, Dec. 31. Consider investing in solar for your home or business through Switch Together, the DMV solar cooperative purchase program. Participants receive an approximately 20% discount on top of the 30% tax credit and receive technical assistance along the way. Switch Together officially begins Wednesday, Aug. 6, but you can sign up anytime and learn more at switchtogether.com.

Electric appliances and home efficiency: For residents ready to switch from gas to electric appliances or add extra insulation or efficient windows, some of these homeowner tax credits expire Dec. 31. The good news is a new Maryland discount program opens soon and Montgomery County and Pepco discount/rebate programs can help offset costs now. Additional funding and financing options are available for low-income residents. Have questions about how to electrify your home?
