Express Permits for Residential Projects To Be Available Online

The Department of Community Planning and Development Services will offer an online same-day process for eligible residential permits, starting Tuesday, Sept. 2. 

Applications will be accepted from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesdays. They will be checked for completeness on receipt. Those that are complete and have fees paid by 12:30 p.m. will be reviewed the same day. 

If a project meets the program’s parameters, the permit will be issued. Standard application fees apply. There is no additional charge for the express service. Applications that do not qualify will be placed in the regular review queue. 

Eligible projects include: 

  • Fences that do not require review from other departments or agencies. Eligible fences must not require Department of Public Works or forestry review, cannot affect roadside trees, must not be in a drainage easement or in a floodplain and must not require Historic District Commission review. 
  • Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning units and furnaces that do not require HDC review. 
  • Water heaters. 
  • Accessory structures under 200 square feet that do not require other departmental or HDC review. 

Accessory structures between 200 and 500 square feet that do not require review from other departments or HDC review. Accessory dwelling units are ineligible.
