Rockville marked a promise a quarter-century in the making when city leaders unearthed and unveiled a millennium time capsule during Rocktobierfest.

Buried Jan. 1, 2001, in Courthouse Square Park, between the fountain and the Maryland Avenue sidewalk, the capsule was created during the city’s yearlong millennium celebration with the intent of being opened 25 years later.

Inside were mementos and treasures that offered a snapshot of Rockville at the turn of the century. Mayor Monique Ashton read a letter from then-Mayor Rose Krasnow to the unearthing’s attendees.
