Firearm Safety
Firearm-related injuries have been the leading cause of death for children and teens ages 1 – 17 since 2020. Tragically in many circumstances, the firearms used in teen suicide attempts and school shootings were also obtained at home and belonged to a family member.
In the home, keeping firearms locked, unloaded, and stored separate from the ammunition in a secure location that is unknown and inaccessible to the children significantly reduces the risk that children and teens will access the firearm to harm themselves or others.
The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) provides educational programs and materials to raise awareness about the importance of gun safety, safe and responsible gun ownership, and how safe gun storage can help prevent gun accidents and theft. Project ChildSafe® provides further resources for talking with children about practicing firearm safety.
To help prevent a dangerous accident, remember McGruff’s 4-Steps of Gun Safety:
- Stop.
- Don’t touch.
- Get away.
- Tell an adult!
This Saturday, November 15th, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at RedGate Park, the Rockville City Police Department will partner with the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office and host its annual Rockville Gun Buyback. This event allows community members to voluntarily turn in functioning firearms and receive $100 and $200 gift cards with no ID needed and no-questions asked! In addition, members of the Rockville community, who own firearms, may reach out to CPL Ronnie Crowe directly at rcrowe@rockvillemd.gov if they are interested in receiving a free cable-style gun lock.
The Montgomery County Department of Police also provides free gun locks to the public at each police district station. Remember, if a firearm at home is accessible such as while being cleaned, never leave it unattended, even for a moment. In Maryland, it is unlawful for children under 16 to have unsupervised access to loaded firearms.
