Be Safe if you’re Stranded in Cold Weather

  • The uncomfortable plunge in temperatures can turn deadly if you get stranded in your car or during an outdoor activity such as hiking or skiing.
  • Take a moment now to review these Winter Weather Safety Tips:
  • Bring your ID and Cell Phone with you and make sure the phone is fully charged.
  • Enable Location Sharing from your phone and tell someone where you are headed before leaving home.
  • Plan your trip being mindful of places where you could seek shelter during the journey.
  • Dress for cold weather from head to toe and dress in layers.
  • Keep a bottle of water, snacks, and hand and foot warmers in your backpack or car.
  • Bring blankets, a first aid kit, and emergency supplies when making a road trip.
  • Signal rescuers: tie a brightly colored cloth to your car’s exterior and raise its hood.
  • Wrap your entire body, including your head, in extra clothing or blankets if stranded.
  • Keep moving your arms and legs as you sit, and huddle with other people for warmth.
  • Stay awake, as sleep may render you vulnerable to cold-related health dangers.
  • Run the motor (and heater) for about 10 minutes per hour, opening one window slightly to let in air.
  • Make sure that snow is not blocking the exhaust pipe to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
