Tips to Prevent Package Theft
During the holiday season, millions of packages will be delivered to homes and businesses. While package theft is often a crime of opportunity, there are steps you can take to discourage criminals and keep your packages safe.
Review these suggestions to help Prevent Package Theft:
- Signup for shipping updates at the time of purchase, and opt-in for tracking notifications that can be monitored through a carrier’s app or website
- Schedule deliveries for times when you will be home, if possible
- Return home and promptly remove unattended packages from outside
- Ask trusted neighbors to pick up packages from your doorstep, if possible
- Require a signature for delivery and purchase tracking or insurance, if offered
- Provide customized directions for carriers to leave packages out of sight
- Install a lockable mailbox at your residence so carriers can deposit packages into a box that only you can retrieve with a key
- Utilize the concierge if you live in a residential building by having packages delivered to a secure mailroom requiring a signature at delivery
- Have the packages delivered to a secure location such as a UPS/FedEx/Amazon Locker or have the items shipped to the merchant’s store for pickup
- Utilize doorbell or front door cameras to help deter and detect potential package thieves
- Report stolen packages promptly to carriers, merchants, and police
