Protect Yourself Against Vehicle Theft & Break-ins

Keeping your vehicles safe and deterring potential criminals from targeting you remains a priority throughout the year. While remembering to use safe habits every day such as always locking your vehicles when you leave them, it’s a good idea to review helpful safety tips that industry experts advise can reduce your chances of being a victim of vehicle thefts and break-ins.

Preventative Measures You Can Take Include:

  • Always lock your vehicle and close the windows completely. 
  • Never leave your engine running with the vehicle unlocked while you quickly run into a business, your home, or anywhere else.
  • Park in well-lit, secure areas. 
  • Remove valuables or ensure they are out of sight. 
  • Employ visible or audible deterrents like alarms, steering wheel locks, or decals. 
  • Consider installing a vehicle immobilizer or GPS tracking system.
  • When purchasing a used vehicle, always make sure you receive an ownership certificate.
  • Never keep the vehicle’s title inside your vehicle; store this document in a secure location such as a safe at home or a bank safety deposit box.
  • If you see someone acting suspiciously near your vehicle, report it to the police.
  • Consider using a car cover to impede easy access by criminals when not using your vehicle for longer periods of time.

  • 1/2/26, a male, age 45, was arrested for burglary in the Unit Blk. Courthouse Square.
  • 1/3/26, a female, age 26, was arrested for DUI at Falls Road and Fallsmead Way.
  • 1/3/26, a male, age 28, was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear after a traffic stop at Veirs Mill Road and Ardennes Avenue.
  • 1/3/26, a male, age 30, was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant for failure to appear in the 200 Blk. N. Washington Street.
  • 1/5/26, a male, age 24, was arrested for DUI at Congressional Lane and Rockville Pike resulting from a vehicle crash.

Incidents

  • 100 Blk. Rollins Avenue, a known subject assaulted the victim by slapping her head at 11:00 a.m. on 12/30/25. The victim was referred for charges.
  • 800 Blk. Rockville Pike, an unknown Hispanic male stole an unsecured and running vehicle at 8:35 p.m. on 12/31/25. The vehicle was later recovered at Clarksburg High School unoccupied.
  • 600 Blk. Blandford Avenue, two known subjects became involved in a physical altercation after a disagreement at 2:34 a.m. on 1/3/26. Both parties were referred to the commissioner for charges.
  • 400 Blk. Redland Boulevard, an unknown black female stole merchandise from a business at 3:40 p.m. on 1/3/26.
  • 1400 Blk. Research Boulevard, an unknown subject broke into three vehicles by breaking their windows and stealing personal property from within at 7:08 p.m. on 1/3/26.
  • Unit Blk. Mannakee Street, an unknown subject broke a window to a secured vehicle and tampered with the ignition at 10:10 pm on 1/3/26.
  • 1200 Blk. 1st Street, two unknown subjects attacked and assaulted the victim in his residence after an argument with a friend at 11:30 p.m. on 1/3/26.
  • 800 Blk. College Parkway, an unknown subject stole a 2019 Hyundai Elantra between 10:00 p.m. on 1/3/26 and 11:00 a.m. on 1/4/26. The vehicle was recovered in the 3000 Blk. Hewitt Avenue in Silver Spring before being reported stolen.
  • 800 Blk. Rockville Pike, an unknown subject attempted to steal an Alfa Romeo from a car dealership after cutting the plastic window to gain entry at 2:30 a.m. on 1/4/26.
  • 500 Blk. College Parkway, a known subject and an unknown subject damaged a door while attempting to enter a residence. After the unsuccessful attempt, they went to another door and made entry when they assaulted two victims inside the residence at 2:53 a.m. on 1/4/26. The known subject was charged at the District Court Commissioner and attempts will be made to identify the unknown subject. 
  • 1600 Blk. Forbes Street, an unknown subject vandalized a motor vehicle by breaking a window at 6:15 p.m. on 1/4/26.
  • 500 Blk. Hungerford Drive, a known subject assaulted the victim after an argument escalated at 12:45 a.m. on 1/5/26. The victim was referred for charges.
  • 1400 Blk. Gladstone Drive, an unknown subject attempted to steal a 2012 Hyundai Tucson by forcing entry into the driver-side door and tampering with the ignition at 3:40 a.m. on 1/5/26. 
  • 2000 Baltimore Road, an unknown subject attempted to steal a 2017 Kia Forte after breaking a window and tampering with the vehicle’s ignition between 1:00 p.m. on 1/4/26 and 7:45 a.m. on 1/5/26.
  • 1500 Rockville Pike, an unknown subject stole merchandise from a business at 8:10 a.m. on 1/5/26.
  • 600 Blk. Hungerford Drive, an unknown subject stole merchandise and an employee’s jacket from a business at 10:52 a.m. on 1/2/26. Incident reported on 1/5/26.
  • 700 Blk. Rockville Pike, an unknown subject stole merchandise from a business at 10:30 a.m. on 1/5/26.
  • 1600 Blk. Rockville Pike, an unknown subject stole merchandise from a business at 6:10 p.m. on 1/5/25.
  • Unit Blk. Tapiola Court, an unknown subject discharged a firearm which struck a residence window at 11:30 p.m. on 1/5/26.
