Safety Tips for Charitable Donations

Whether the devastation stems from war or a natural disaster, conflict and humanitarian crises present a prime opportunity for fraudsters to pose as a charity and obtain your money under false pretenses. If you’re contacted for funds concerning humanitarian relief by email, text, or phone:

  • Ask for detailed information about the charity, including the address and phone number.
  • Verify Legitimacy from a trusted third-party source such as Guidestar.org, which provides free information about nonprofits, and Google the charity for public feedback.
  • Check the IRS Status – confirm the charity’s tax-exempt status at the IRS website.
  • Be cautious of unsolicited e-mails and phone calls and avoid requests asking for wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency.
  • Keep receipts and monitor your statements after donating to avoid unauthorized recurring charges.
  • Follow your gut – your instincts are more accurate than you may think. If you don’t feel comfortable and if a donation doesn’t seem right, don’t contribute.

For more information about Protecting Yourself from Charity Scams, the Montgomery County Police Department provides further information and resources, including filing a police report in the jurisdiction where you live if you become a victim of a fraud or scam.

Finally, if you become aware of a fraud or a scam, you can submit a complaint online with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC): https://reportfraud.ftc.gov.
