Snow Removal Requirements and Preparedness Tips

Warnings for winter storms give us time to prepare for approaching snowstorms, ice, high winds, and cold temperatures that remain below freezing for several days. When alerted by a winter storm warning or, preferably, at the beginning of the winter season, residents can make sure they have snow shovels, warm winter clothing, emergency first aid kits, non-perishable food supplies, flashlights, batteries, pet food, blankets, and appropriate winter emergency supplies inside their vehicles.

For Rockville residents, becoming familiar with snow removal requirements is important:

  • After a snowstorm, property and business owners are expected to clear sidewalks within 24 – 72 hours of the last snowfall, depending on the amount of snowfall.
    • 1 – 3 inches: 24 hours
    • 3 – 9 inches: 48 hours
    • 10 inches or more: 72 hours
  • City crews coordinate road clearing and sidewalk work depending on the severity of the storm. Accessible curb ramps, sidewalks, and pathways on publicly owned property are cleared by crews from city departments.
  • Primary roads are prioritized for snow plowing and consist of major arterial roads, emergency routes, central business districts, and primary residential roads near schools.
  • Secondary roads consist of the remainder of neighborhood streets, alleyways, and cul-de-sacs. The city’s Snow Priorities Map shows which roads are primary and secondary.
