Safe Steps, Cleaner Streams: Reducing Salt Use for Smarter Winter Deicing
February 3, 2026
Salt helps keep our streets and sidewalks safe in the winter. But too much salt can harm wildlife and pets, damage infrastructure, and contaminate drinking water. Follow these steps to keep your sidewalks and driveway safe, while minimizing the environmental impact:
1. Shovel early and often. Salt works best on thin layers of ice or snow.
2. Scatter salt to leave a few inches of space between the grains.
3. Sweep up extra salt for future use and to prevent it from washing away.
