Reporting Downed Power Lines and Fallen Trees
Severe storms and tornadoes occur throughout the year and can cause power outages, damage to buildings when trees fall, downed power lines, and exposed communication lines. If you encounter a power line hanging down, or a communication line that is exposed, out of the ground, or if a pedestal or cable junction box is open, has exposed wires, or is a tripping hazard, do not attempt to move, relocate, cut, or otherwise come in close contact with these wires or power lines.
- Keep yourself and others a safe distance of at least 30 feet from the downed power line and avoid touching anything that may be in contact with the line.
- Call 911 and report the downed line to emergency services.
- Contact the emergency numbers of your utility company and cable service provider if you know their numbers.
- If in a vehicle and the line falls on your vehicle, stay inside unless in there an immediate danger.
- Electricity can travel through the ground around a downed line so be cautious of your footing and avoid stepping in puddles or uneven ground in the area.
