Safe Driving in Highway Work Zones
April 20 – 24 is National Work Zone Awareness Week, an annual campaign designed at the start of construction season every spring to encourage safe driving in highway work zones. Each year, the MDOT SHA (Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration) joins other national and federal transportation organizations in raising awareness of work zone safety.
The message is to focus, slow down, and stay alert when driving through work zones.
Reckless or distracted driving is dangerous for workers and drivers. In Maryland from 2019 – 2023, one out of every two people killed in work-zone crashes were motorists. The Maryland Highway Safety Office launched Be the Driver – a highway safety campaign focused on safe driving behaviors. Remember:
- Give room: When safe, motorists should move over a lane to leave room for roadway workers to safely do their jobs.
- Distractions, following too closely, and driving too fast are the leading causes of work zone crashes.
- Drivers of large vehicles should allow extra space to safely navigate work zones.
- Plan ahead: Spring and summer are heavy roadway construction seasons. View a complete listing of major roadway projects in Maryland.
April is also Distracted Driving Awareness Month. To learn more about how you can help yourself, your family, or your employees drive safely, the National Safety Council provides numerous online educational resources.
