Rockville Tops Maryland Cities in National Safety Ranking

Rockville Tops Maryland Cities in National Safety Ranking

October 1, 2026

Rockville ranks No. 18 among the nation’s safest midsize cities, according to a new study by SmartAsset, and is the highest-ranked city in Maryland on the list.

Several uniformed police officers stand in a row, with visible gold badges and department patches on their jackets.

The study looked at more than 300 midsize cities, those with populations of 65,000 to fewer than 250,000, using an overall score based on violent crime, property crime, traffic fatality rates and natural disaster risk.

Rockville’s crime rates in the study were below the FBI’s 2024 national rates. The study listed Rockville’s violent crime rate of 1.5 per 1,000 residents and its property crime rate of 15.23 per 1,000 residents.

The study also listed a traffic fatality rate of 5.62 per 100,000 residents and a natural disaster risk rating of “relatively moderate.” Both measures reflect Montgomery County-level data, which the study used as a proxy for city conditions.

Rockville ranked ahead of Frederick at No. 19 and Gaithersburg at No. 22.

The study’s crime figures came from the FBI’s 2024 “Crime in the United States” data.
