Prescription Drug Safety Tips

Since 1985, October has been designated as Talk About Prescriptions Month. During this month, public health agencies encourage patients to review medication safety and best practices to prevent misuse or abuse.

The Key Goals of the Public Awareness Include:

  • Prevention of Misuse and Abuse – potential addiction, side effects, and interactions
  • Informed Communication – patients understand their medication benefits and risks
  • Medication Safety – guidance for safe storage and responsible disposal
  • Empowering Patients – patients ask questions, discuss alternatives, and check-in with their healthcare providers to ensure medications still work effectively

For a list of essential questions to consider when taking prescription medications and best practices, see: https://bagitcancer.org/2024/10/october-is-talk-about-prescriptions-month/

In February 2025, the FBI warned that some noncompliant healthcare providers, including pharmacies, weight loss clinics, and medical spas, were engaging in fraudulent compounding practices and unlawfully misrepresenting compounded weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy. These drugs mixed with other ingredients posed safety risks with potential health consequences to patients, such as gastrointestinal, nervous system, cardiac, and psychiatric disorders, and even death.

Tips to Protect Yourself:

  • Avoid suspiciously low prices of weight loss drugs sold by unlicensed healthcare providers.
  • Be cautious when purchasing any pharmaceutical drugs online and buy only from licensed pharmacies.
  • Consult with your medical provider before using any pharmaceutical weight loss drugs.

Finally, as part of the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the RCPD will collect leftover and expired prescription drugs at the Rockville City Police Department from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24th, 2026.
