October is Safe Sleep Awareness Month, an opportunity to highlight safe infant sleep practices and educate parents and caregivers on how to keep babies safe during sleep and reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related infant deaths, such as accidental suffocation.
The ABCD’s of safe infant sleep:
ALONE – Babies should sleep alone in their own crib, bassinet, or portable play yard “pack and play” that is free of blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, bumper pads, or any soft or loose bedding. Avoid overheating and dress babies in light “sleep sack” clothing instead of heavy blankets. Room-share, but don’t bed-share if you want to have the baby sleep in your room.
BACK – Babies should sleep on their backs for all naps and nighttime sleep. Use only a firm, flat mattress designed for the crib with a tight fitted sheet. Avoid inclined sleepers, sleep positioners, or wedges. Never place a baby in a car seat or inclined chair on an elevated surface. Further, don’t put babies to sleep with bottles or sippy cups, and always supervise infants while bottle feeding and toddlers while eating or drinking.
CRIB – Babies should sleep in a crib, bassinet, or play yard that is properly assembled, Baby Safety Alliance Verified, and approved for their age, weight, length, and stages of development (rolling over, sitting up independently, etc.). Avoid sleeping on a couch, chair, or co-sleeping with a baby. For guidance on whether your child is ready to transition from a crib to a toddler bed, learn the signs and additional safety concerns for selecting a safe toddler bed and childproofing the bedroom.
