America Recycles Day is Sunday, Nov. 15. Celebrate this month, and all year, by recycling right.

Plastic: Think “Bottles, Tubs, Jars and Jugs” only. Skip the recycling numbers and symbols. Recycle these plastic containers:

Bottles, such as water, salad dressing and shampoo bottles; tubs with snap-on lids, like margarine or coffee containers, and small buckets; jars with screw-on lids, such as peanut butter, medicine or hand-cream containers; and jugs with molded handles, such as milk or laundry detergent jugs.

No plastic bags, film, wrap or air-filled packing pillows. Many grocery and retail stores have collection bins for plastic bags and film. Find a drop-off location at bit.ly/howtorecyclebags. Never put recyclable materials in plastic bags for curbside recycling.

“Styrofoam” is not recyclable. This includes foam packing materials, coffee cups and takeout containers, even if they have a recycling symbol.

No “tanglers.” Keep items that can wrap around sorting equipment out of recycling bins. This includes strings, wires, hoses, cords, light strands, VHS cassettes, hangers and plastic bags.

Avoid “wishful recycling.” When in doubt, throw it out. Putting the wrong items in recycling bins can contaminate an entire load.
