Woottons Mill Park, a 106.5-acre recreational park and forest preserve in the Rockshire neighborhood, is named after the historic Wootton’s Mill, which once stood near Watts Branch stream. The gristmill was constructed and began operations in 1821, grinding the Wootton family’s grain and, upon the payment of a toll, that of their neighbors. The two millstones on display at the park were donated by the Veirs family, who wished the history of Wootton’s Mill to be kept alive through an exhibit at the original mill site.

The park features a thriving community garden with nearly 200 plots where gardeners can grow their own food and other plants. Have a green thumb? Visit the Garden Plot Rentals at Woottons Mill Park page to learn more.

If you’re in the mood for some sports, the park offers two tennis courts and a basketball court just south of the community garden. There are also two playgrounds with separate units for different ages—one near Hurley Avenue and the other by Aintree Drive. Throughout the park, you’ll find picnic tables, benches, and outdoor fitness equipment for those who want to enjoy a workout with a side of fresh air.

Bring your leashed dog for a stroll along the paved nature trails, which wind through the park and connect to nearby roadways, including Watts Branch Parkway to the north, Aintree Drive to the east, Greenplace Terrace near Fallsmead Elementary School to the south, and Hurley Avenue to the west. A parking lot at the entrance on Hurley Avenue makes it easy to start your adventure in this lovely park!
