Prepare for Emergencies

The preparedness of our community for emergencies begins with individual, household, and business preparedness. When an emergency happens, make sure you are prepared by taking a few simple steps.

Sign Up for Emergency Alerts

Staying informed locally begins by signing up for Alert Rockville, which is part of the Alert Montgomery network managed by Montgomery County’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. This system allows you to receive emergency alerts from the city and county by email and text.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also has the FEMA smartphone app, which allows you to receive real-time weather alerts, locate emergency shelters, and prepare for known hazards.

Create an Emergency Plan

The Department of Homeland Security’s READY campaign provides information to take core preparedness steps that allow you to:

• Stay informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate
  responses.
• Make a family emergency plan.
• Build an emergency supply kit.
• Get involved in your community by taking action to prepare for emergencies.

Take Emergency Preparedness Training

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service maintains a volunteer-based Community Emergency Response Team, which uses the DHS/FEMA/Citizen Corps national standard curriculum and certification, and provides free training ranging from CPR and first aid to operating a fire extinguisher.
