Help Shape the Future of East Rockville and Rockville Pike

Rockville residents will soon have a say in what their neighborhoods look like for decades to come, as the city kicks off planning updates for two distinct areas — the established East Rockville community and bustling Rockville Pike corridor.
The Comprehensive Planning Division in the Department of Community Planning and Development Services is leading both efforts, which will guide future land use, development, streetscapes, public infrastructure and other planning decisions. The work will build on Rockville 2040, the city’s comprehensive plan and ultimately produce updated recommendations for each area.
The two planning efforts will begin this summer but follow separate timelines, with adoption of the East Rockville plan expected in summer 2027 and the Rockville Pike plan by the end of next year.
Both projects will appear on Engage Rockville at engagerockville.com, where the public can sign up for updates and learn how to get involved.
East Rockville is an established, mostly residential neighborhood east of Rockville Town Center and the Rockville Metro station. The planning area includes East Rockville, Burgundy Knolls, Charles Walk and Redgate Farms.
Rockville Pike is one of Rockville’s most active commercial corridors, with Twinbrook Metro station to the south and a mix of commercial, residential and office uses. The current plan addresses mixed-use development, walkability, transit, parks, street connections and the future of the pike as a multimodal corridor.
Residents, business owners, property owners and others interested in either planning area can participate through public meetings, project updates, surveys and comment forms.
Both plans will ultimately require public hearings and votes by the Planning Commission and Mayor and Council.
