Drought-Friendly Lawn Care Tips for Summer

July 1, 2026

This summer’s dry stretch is tough on lawns. Here are some tips to conserve water while reducing stress on your grass.

Water wisely. Established lawns can tolerate dry weather and may naturally go dormant. If watering is needed, water deeply and infrequently, preferably in the early morning.

Mow high. Set mower blades to 3-4 inches. Taller grass shades the soil, develops deeper roots and needs less water to stay healthy.

Leave grass clippings on the lawn. “Grasscycling” returns nutrients and moisture to the soil, helping lawns retain water and reducing the need for additional care.

Feed naturally. For lawns that need a boost, use compost tea or other organic soil amendments that support healthy soil and strong roots without harming local waterways.
