Don’t Let Rain Go Down the Drain

With dry conditions across the region, every drop counts, including the ones that fall on your roof. 

Rain barrels collect runoff from gutters and downspouts, storing it for use on gardens, lawns and landscaping. A single barrel can hold 50-80 gallons, enough to water a small garden several times over, while keeping polluted runoff out of local streams. They’re low-maintenance, easy to install and, through the city’s RainScapes Program, eligible for a rebate. 

In the meantime, a few simple habits can stretch your water supply further: water plants in the early morning to reduce evaporation; fix leaky hoses and outdoor faucets; and layer mulch or fallen leaves in garden beds to retain soil moisture.
