About Apply for a Backyard Chicken Permit

Residents of single-family homes in Rockville may keep up to five female chickens for personal use, but must obtain a permit first. Chickens are not permitted at townhouses or for slaughter. Roosters are not permitted.

How to Apply

Notify Neighbors

Provide written notification to all next-door neighbors and those whose properties connect to yours.

Create a Site Plan

Include a site plan with your application that shows the location of the chicken coop. Rockville requires at least two square feet per chicken and access to an outdoor enclosure. The enclosure must be located at least five feet from the property boundary.

Submit the Application to the Rockville City Police Department

Application packets are available in English, Spanish, and Chinese. Bring all materials with you to the Rockville City Police Station between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Pay the $25 permit fee by check or money order made payable to the City of Rockville.

Register with the State of Maryland

Complete the Poultry Registration Form and register your chickens with the State of Maryland.
