The Police Education Program is designed to increase community awareness and understanding of the role and responsibilities of the Rockville City Police Department. Participants gain firsthand knowledge of how officers serve and protect the community through classroom instruction, demonstrations, and discussions.
Program Details
Classes are held one evening per week from 7–9 p.m. for eight consecutive weeks at various locations throughout the City of Rockville. To be eligible for graduation, participants must attend at least six of the eight sessions. Participants are responsible for their own transportation.
There is no cost to participate. The program is free. The only commitment required is your time.
During the program, participants are introduced to the following topics:
- Department introduction and overview
- Office of Professional Responsibility
- Special Operations
- Community Engagement Unit
- Academy training and patrol procedures
- Criminal law
- Maryland traffic law
- Traffic Unit
- Crime scene investigation
- Police investigative procedures
- Emergency communications
- Firearms safety
- K-9 Unit
- Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office
- Ride-along (highly recommended but not required)
Eligibility
The program is open to individuals 18 years or older who live or work in Montgomery County, Maryland. Due to limited enrollment, Rockville residents receive priority consideration. All applicants are subject to a background check.
How to Apply
Applications are now being accepted for the 2026 Police Education Program, which runs 7–9 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 3 – July 22, 2026. Applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13.
Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with a maximum of 20 participants per class. Approved applicants will be notified by department personnel.
