Public Transportation

Rockville is conveniently located along two Metrorail stops with easy access into Washington, D.C. With extensive bus routes and commuter options, Rockville is easily accessible to those who do not travel by car.

Public Transit Options

WMATA Metrorail and Metrobus

Rockville is connected to the regional public transportation system through WMATA, which runs the Metrorail and Metrobus lines.

RideOn

Montgomery County offers their own transit service called RideOn, which operates dozens of bus lines throughout the county. These bus lines carry passengers on local and regional trips through Rockville.

MARC (Maryland Transit Administration)

The Maryland Transit Administration runs three commuter rail lines (MARC) from Martinsburg, WV to the west, Perryville, MD to the north, and Washington’s Union Station to the south.

Amtrak

Amtrak’s Capitol Limited line runs through Rockville between Washington, D.C. and Chicago, IL through Pittsburgh, PA and Cleveland, OH.

Carpool

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation provides benefits for carpooling and ridesharing, including a Guaranteed Ride Home Program.

Planned Transit Facilities

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation currently leads an effort to design a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Montgomery County, including within the City of Rockville. BRT is a specialized service that uses limited stops and dedicated bus-only lanes to provide faster and more frequent transit.

There are three BRT initiatives that will provide transit service to Rockville. More information about each of these projects, as well as opportunities to sign up for informational updates, can be found at the following links:

• The MD 355 BRT Project will provide service along MD 355 throughout Rockville.
• The Veirs Mill Road BRT Project will provide service along Veirs Mill Road to the Rockville Metro station.
• The Great Seneca Transit Network Project will provide transit service through the King Farm neighborhood to the Shady Grove Metro station.
