Seasonal Leaf Collection

About Seasonal Leaf Collection

The City of Rockville provides leaf vacuuming from neighborhood curbsides twice a year — in April and again between October and December.

Rake leaves to the curb by 6 a.m. on the first day of the scheduled collection period. Do not rake them out more than one week in advance to avoid damaging grass or creating fire hazards. If city crews are unable to complete a collection during the scheduled week, they will return the following Saturday to finish.

Tips for Leaf Collection

  • Rake leaves next to, but not into, roadways, gutters, or bike lanes, and keep them away from parked vehicles.
  • Avoid parking near leaf piles to allow access for city crews.
  • Remove sticks, grass clippings, and other debris from leaf piles to prevent equipment damage.
  • Do not bag leaves in plastic or dump them in storm drains.
  • Consider alternative methods, such as mulching or composting. Montgomery County offers free compost bins to residents and businesses.
  • Leave some leaves in place or rake them into garden beds to act as natural mulch and provide habitat for pollinators like butterflies, fireflies, and native bees.
  • Mow over leaves to shred them into small pieces that can return nutrients to your lawn.
