Speed Watch Programs

About Speed Watch Programs

When the city receives a report of unsafe traffic conditions or consistent speeding in an area, we have several speed management programs to help slow traffic as a temporary solution.

For long-term solutions, residents can request a traffic review to determine whether further intervention is needed. Traffic management solutions may include adding a speed bump, a street sign, or other measures.

High-Visibility Enforcement

Officers assigned to the Traffic Enforcement Unit conduct high-visibility enforcement of traffic violations in high-crash areas. Enforcement is also conducted in response to community complaints. Officers use radar and lidar to enforce speed limits within the city and employ both marked and unmarked vehicles. Officers also use police motorcycles to enforce traffic laws in areas where vehicles have limited access.

Speed Indicator

A large, radar-operated display board is placed on the side of selected roadways to show approaching motorists their speed. This unit primarily serves as a deterrent and has proven to be an effective public relations tool.

Tickets are issued only in cases of excessive speeds deemed hazardous to community safety by the radar operator. The speed indicator is placed in targeted locations throughout the city, primarily in neighborhoods or communities where residents have reported speeding concerns.
