Tips for Holding Recycling and Refuse
When Collection is Missed Due to Severe Winter Weather
Some food waste can be disposed of in garbage disposals, if available. Double bag food that cannot be disposed of in garbage disposals, such as meat with bones or fat, and place the bags in the gray refuse cart. If the cart becomes full, remove refuse from the cart that is not food and place it in sturdy trash bags.
Place as many recycling items as possible in the recycling cart. These include such as sturdy plastics, paper, cardboard, etc., making more room for refuse. If your refuse cart is normally stored in a garage or shed, place it outside with the lid closed. The overnight freezing temperatures and moderate daytime temperatures will keep the food waste frozen or partially frozen, thereby eliminating or reducing odors.
On the evening before collection day, set out the cart and any extra bags at the curb for collection. Collectors will anticipate extra bags during those weeks and will be instructed to collect them because of unforeseen circumstances.
When collection is missed because of storms or other unforeseen circumstances, you can securely bag the waste and take it to the Montgomery County Transfer Station. The resident drop off entrance is located on Frederick Avenue (Route355) at Ridgemont Avenue.
