The City of Rockville partners with the Maryland Department of Agriculture to reduce mosquito breeding. MDA performs monthly monitoring of select city-owned properties from May through September and treats water on the properties with an Environmental Protection Agency-approved larvicide when appropriate. In addition, city employees are trained to identify and reduce mosquito breeding areas.
The city also inspects public and private stormwater facilities — ponds that collect and release stormwater runoff — to ensure they are functioning properly. Maintenance and repairs are enforced when necessary. When properly designed and maintained, stormwater facilities are not preferred habitats for mosquitoes.
How to Reduce Mosquitoes
Asian tiger mosquitoes are the most common nuisance mosquito in Maryland and often do not fly more than 150 yards from where they breed. If you are being bitten at home, mosquitoes are likely breeding in your yard or nearby in small amounts of standing water. Eliminating standing water is the best way to reduce mosquitoes.
